These timings are modelled, not measured. They are calculated from each food's fat, fibre, water content and physical form — the factors that genuinely drive transit speed. Published gastric-emptying figures exist for a handful of laboratory test meals, not for arbitrary combinations of 80 everyday ingredients, so treat these as illustrative rather than clinical. The direction of every effect is well established: fat is the strongest brake, liquids leave in minutes, and fibre slows the stomach while speeding the colon.

Questions people actually ask

Does drinking water with a meal dilute your stomach acid?

No. The stomach continuously regulates its own acidity, and a glass of water passes through in minutes. Water with a meal does not meaningfully impair digestion, and for anyone eating fibre it generally helps.

How long does food stay in the stomach?

Roughly one to four hours depending mostly on fat content. Liquids leave in minutes, a light carbohydrate meal in one to two hours, and a fatty meal can take three to four. The whole journey from mouth to exit usually takes one to three days.

Where does intestinal gas come from?

Mostly from bacteria in the large intestine fermenting fibre and fermentable carbohydrates that the small intestine could not absorb. It is a sign the system is working normally, not failing.

Does chewing more actually help?

Yes, modestly. Chewing is mechanical breakdown plus the first enzyme (salivary amylase, which starts on starch), and it is the only part of digestion you consciously control. It will not transform your health, but larger pieces do take the stomach longer.
