Start with the shape of the equation
If the unknown appears to the first power only, it is linear and the Algebra Calculator will rearrange and solve it step by step. If the unknown is squared, it is quadratic and needs the Quadratic Equation, which applies the formula and reports the discriminant — the part under the square root that tells you whether there are two real roots, one repeated root, or none at all. Recognising which case you are in is most of the work.
What the discriminant is telling you
A negative discriminant is not an error, it is an answer: the parabola never crosses the x-axis, so there is no real solution. That is the correct result for questions like "when does this projectile reach a height it never reaches". The calculator also gives the vertex, which is where a real-world quadratic usually has its maximum or minimum — the peak of a trajectory or the price that maximises revenue.
Powers and factors
The Exponents handles powers, roots and negative and fractional exponents, where the rules are easy to misremember: a negative exponent is a reciprocal, and a fractional one is a root. The LCM & GCD gives the lowest common multiple and greatest common divisor — the LCM being what you need to add fractions with different denominators, the GCD what you need to simplify the result. When you need a keypad or a number
