Waste allowance: why you always order more
Measure a room, multiply length by width, order exactly that much material — and you will run short. Not because the maths was wrong, but because material gets cut, broken, mis-set and mismatched, and because the shop sells in boxes rather than square metres. A waste allowance is how you price that in before it becomes a second trip.
Where the waste actually goes
Three different losses hide under one word. Cutting waste is the offcut you cannot use anywhere else — the strip left when a tile meets a wall, the end of a board. Breakage is what arrives or ends up damaged. And set-out loss comes from pattern: a diagonal tile layout or a plank floor with staggered joints throws away far more than a straight grid.
That is why the allowance is a slider, not a constant. Ten percent is a reasonable default on a flat, well-formed concrete slab; uneven ground, deep footings or awkward access justify more. A simple straight tile layout sits near 10% too, while diagonals and busy patterns want 15% or higher.
Rounding beats the percentage
Here is the part that surprises people: the whole-unit rounding usually moves the order more than the allowance does. Take a 3 × 2.4 m wall with 30 × 60 cm tiles. The area is 7.2 m², each tile is 0.18 m², so you need 40 tiles. Add 10% waste and it becomes 44. But tiles come 8 to a box, so you buy 6 boxes — 48 tiles. You have ended up with 20% over the bare area whatever the slider said.
Flooring behaves the same way. A 4.5 × 3.5 m room is 15.75 m²; at 10% waste that is 17.33 m², and at 2.2 m² per pack you need 7.9 packs, so 8 packs — 17.6 m² bought and about 1.85 m² spare. Paint and concrete work differently
Paint is not really a waste problem, it is a coverage-and-openings problem. Wall area comes from perimeter times height, minus the doors and windows at standard deductions of 1.9 m² and 1.4 m², then multiplied by the number of coats and divided by the tin's stated coverage. A 4.5 × 3.5 m room at 2.4 m high with one door and two windows works out at 33.7 m² of wall, 67.4 m² over two coats, and about 5.6 litres at 12 m²/L — which in practice means a 5 L tin plus a 2.5 L. Concrete has the opposite risk profile: you cannot top up a pour halfway through. A 4 × 3 m slab at 100 mm is 1.2 m³, and 10% takes it to 1.32 m³. Ordering short here does not mean a second trip, it means a cold joint in the middle of your slab, which is why the allowance is never worth shaving on a pour. A rule of thumb
Round up, keep the offcuts, and treat the leftover box as insurance rather than a mistake. Spare tiles from the original batch are close to impossible to match two years later when one cracks — the cheapest repair material you will ever buy is the box you nearly did not order.
