How weighted grades really work
Most students average their marks and assume that is their grade. It usually is not — and the gap tends to run in the pessimistic direction right when it matters, because the assessment carrying the most weight is normally the one you have not sat yet.
The weighted average, in one example
Say an essay scored 72% and is worth 20% of the module, coursework scored 65% at 30%, and the exam scored 58% at 50%. Multiply each score by its weight and add: 1,440 + 1,950 + 2,900 = 6,290. Divide by the total weight of 100 and the module grade is 62.9%.
A plain average of 72, 65 and 58 gives 65% — nearly two points higher. The difference is entirely that the weakest score carried half the module while the strongest carried a fifth. Weighting does not just adjust the number; it decides which piece of work your grade is mostly made of. What you need on the final
Turn the same formula around and it answers the more urgent question. If you are currently at 68% across work worth 60% of the module, and the final exam is the remaining 40%, your coursework has already banked 68 × 0.6 = 40.8 points. To reach a 75% target you need 34.2 points from the exam, and 34.2 ÷ 0.4 = 85.5%.
That is a genuinely useful number to have before you plan revision, and the final grade calculator produces it directly. It also tells you when a target has become arithmetically impossible: if the answer comes out above 100%, no amount of exam performance gets you there, and it is better to know that in week eight than in the exam hall.
GPA is the same sum with credits as weights
Grade point averages look like a separate system and are not. Credit hours are simply the weights: maths at 3.7 over 4 credits, physics at 3.3 over 3, English at 4.0 over 2 gives quality points of 14.8 + 9.9 + 8.0 = 32.7, over 9 credits, for a CGPA of 3.63.

Reading the result honestly
A weighted average is a description, not a prediction. It tells you where you stand given what has been marked, and it will move as more weight is resolved — sharply, if the outstanding assessment is large. Two habits make it reliable: check the weights against the module handbook rather than memory, and recalculate after each result rather than once at the end. Rounding, and the mark that decides a boundary
A weighted average almost never lands on a whole number, so the rounding rule matters more than students expect. Most institutions round the final module mark once, at the end, to the nearest whole percent — 62.9% becomes 63%. What they generally do not do is round each component first, because rounding three times before averaging can shift the result by most of a percentage point, which is exactly the margin that separates one classification from the next. If you are recalculating your own position, keep every intermediate figure at full precision and round only the last number.
Boundary policies vary and are worth reading rather than assuming. Some courses lift a mark sitting within one or two points of a boundary if the profile of grades supports it; others apply no discretion at all. Neither policy changes the arithmetic — it changes what you should do with a result of 68.4% when the boundary is 70%, which is usually to check whether any outstanding assessment still carries enough weight to close the gap.
When the weights do not add to 100
Module handbooks are not always tidy. Weights may be quoted out of a different total, a component may be dropped, or resits may replace one element with another. The formula copes as long as you divide by the sum of the weights you actually used rather than by 100 — which is what makes a mid-term calculation meaningful when only two of four assessments are marked. Divide by 100 too early and every partial result looks catastrophically low, because the unmarked work is silently being scored as zero.
The same care applies to combining marks across modules: a 20-credit module counts twice as much as a 10-credit one, so an average of module percentages is only correct if every module carries identical credit. Where they differ, the credit values are the weights — the same sum again, run one level up.
Common questions
How do I calculate a weighted average?
Multiply each score by its weight, add those together, then divide by the total weight. A 70 worth 40% and an 80 worth 60% gives (70×40 + 80×60) ÷ 100 = 76 — not 75, which is what the unweighted average would give.
What score do I need on the final to pass?
Rearrange the same formula. Take the mark you need overall, subtract what you have already banked, and divide by the weight of what is left. If the final is worth 50% and you need 60 overall with 55 banked from the first half, you need 65 in the final.
Do weights have to add up to 100?
They do not have to be expressed as percentages, but they do have to be divided by their own total. Weights of 2, 3 and 5 work perfectly well — the divisor is simply 10 rather than 100.
