What your result means

A weighted average gives each assessment influence in proportion to its weighting rather than treating them equally. An exam worth half the module moves your grade far more than an essay worth a tenth, which is why a straight average of your scores is almost always wrong.

Why this one is different

Weights are checked, not assumed: the total you entered is displayed, so a set adding to 90% or 110% is caught before it quietly distorts the average. The strongest and weakest rows name the component rather than just the mark, which makes each row actionable without cross-referencing your own input list.

Where marks are really won

A brilliant score on a small component barely moves the needle

Scoring ninety on a component worth ten percent adds nine points to your overall. Scoring seventy on one worth fifty adds thirty-five. Effort spent on the heavy components is worth several times as much, and it is worth knowing that before the deadlines stack up.

The weakest-component row is the other half of the story. Lifting a poor mark on a heavily weighted piece usually beats polishing an already-strong one.

How it works

Each score is multiplied by its weight, those products are added together, and the total is divided by the sum of the weights. Dividing by the actual weight total rather than assuming one hundred means partial entries still give a meaningful running average.

Formula

weighted average = Σ(score × weight) ÷ Σ(weight)

Dividing by the sum of weights rather than 100 keeps the result meaningful when only some assessments are complete.

Example calculation

Essay 72% at 20%, coursework 65% at 30%, exam 58% at 50%:

(72 × 20) + (65 × 30) + (58 × 50) = 1,440 + 1,950 + 2,900
Total = 6,290 ÷ 100
Weighted average = 62.9%

A simple unweighted average would have given 65% — nearly two points higher, because it ignores that the weakest score carried half the module.

Frequently asked questions

What if my weights do not add to 100?

The calculator divides by whatever they do total, giving your average across the work entered. That is exactly what you want for a running grade mid-term; for a final grade, make sure everything is listed.

Can I use points instead of percentages?

Yes. If every component is marked out of the same maximum, enter raw points as the score. If the maxima differ, convert each to a percentage first.

How do I handle a dropped lowest grade?

Simply leave that line out. The remaining weights will no longer total one hundred, and the calculator will normalise across the rest.

Why use weights at all?

Because assessments differ in size and importance. A 60 percent exam and a 10 percent quiz should not move your grade equally, and weighting is how a course expresses that.

How do I find my weights?

They are in the module handbook or syllabus, usually in an assessment table. If a component is described in credits or marks rather than percentages, enter those numbers directly as weights.

What happens if I enter weights that total more than 100?

The tool normalises them, so entering 30, 30 and 60 behaves the same as 25, 25 and 50. That makes raw mark totals usable as weights without converting first.

Can I model a what-if score before an assessment?

Yes. Enter a hypothetical score for the unmarked component and the result shows where you would land, which is the fastest way to see how much the remaining work matters.
