What next?

Placeholder text, then the counts and formats it has to fit.

How to use this tool

  1. Set how many paragraphs you want.
  2. Placeholder text generates instantly.
  3. Copy it into your design or mockup.

What your result means

The output is deliberately meaningless text sized to your specification. Its value is that it has roughly the word lengths and rhythm of real Latin-alphabet prose, so a layout filled with it wraps, breaks and greys out the way real copy will — without anyone stopping to read it and comment on the wording.

Two limits worth remembering. Lorem ipsum has no capital-heavy headlines, no numerals and no long compound words, so it will not stress-test a layout the way German, Finnish or a product name will. And placeholder text left in a live page is one of the most common launch embarrassments there is — search your project for "lorem" before you ship.

Why this one is different

The point of placeholder copy is volume, so the volume is measured: paragraphs, sentences, words, characters and the averages that tell you whether this is body text or a caption. Three copy buttons hand it over as plain text, as wrapped paragraph markup or as Markdown, and the output says plainly what Latin cannot test for you — no diacritics, no compounds, and a fresh roll of sentence lengths every time you press Generate.

How much text a slot usually holds

SlotTypical lengthAsk this tool for
Button or nav label1–3 wordsOne paragraph, take the opening words
Card description10–20 wordsOne paragraph, one sentence of it
Meta descriptionAround 155 charactersOne paragraph; the counter tells you where to cut
Body paragraph50–75 wordsOne paragraph as generated
Long-form article section300–500 wordsFive or six paragraphs

Each generated paragraph runs four to six sentences of eight to seventeen words, so 32 to 102 words with an average near 63. Match the count to the slot rather than filling the region and trimming later — a mockup that only looks right at one text length is a mockup that will break.

Older than you think

Placeholder text with a 2,000-year-old secret

Lorem Ipsum looks like nonsense Latin, but it's scrambled from a real text — Cicero's "De finibus bonorum et malorum," written in 45 BC. Typesetters have used it since the 1500s to show a layout without readers being distracted by the words.

That's the whole point: meaningless text lets you judge spacing, rhythm and hierarchy on their own. Drop it into any mockup, then swap in the real copy later.

Where the text comes from

Lorem ipsum is not nonsense — it is scrambled Latin, adapted from Cicero's De finibus bonorum et malorum, written in 45 BC. Typesetters have used it since at least the 1500s for a practical reason: text you cannot read is text you cannot be distracted by. Reviewers judge the layout, spacing and typography rather than the words, which is exactly what a design review is supposed to be about.

Worked example

Asking for 3 paragraphs produces roughly this shape:

Each paragraph = 4–6 sentences
Each sentence = 8–17 words
3 paragraphs ≈ 100–300 words
600–2,000 characters

That range is deliberately wide: sentence and paragraph lengths are drawn at random on every generation, exactly as real copy varies. If you need a specific length rather than a specific block count, generate a little more than you need and trim — or count what you have with the word counter.

Frequently asked questions

Should I use lorem ipsum or realistic placeholder copy?

Use lorem ipsum when you want feedback on layout and typography, and realistic copy when you want feedback on the design as a whole. Real content changes everything — length, tone and hierarchy — so a layout that only works with lorem ipsum is a layout that does not work.

Does it match the character distribution of English?

Roughly. Latin has a similar distribution of word lengths and letter frequencies to English, which is why the "colour" of a block of lorem ipsum on the page looks right. It is a poor stand-in for languages with very different word lengths, such as German or Finnish.

Is placeholder text ever a problem in production?

Frequently. Lorem ipsum has shipped in live products, printed brochures and app store listings more times than anyone would like. Search your codebase for "lorem" before release.

Where does the lorem ipsum text come from?

It is scrambled Latin derived from a first-century BC work by Cicero, in use as typesetting filler since at least the 1500s. The scrambling is deliberate, so it reads as texture rather than language.

How many words should I generate for a realistic test?

Match the real content. If a card holds a 60-character headline and 25 words of body copy, generate that, not three tidy paragraphs, or the layout will look better in the mockup than in production.

Should I test with long and short text?

Always. The most common layout failures appear at the extremes: a one-word heading that leaves a gap, and a heading that wraps to three lines and pushes everything below it.

Assumptions & limitations

Placeholder copy is a stand-in, and every stand-in makes assumptions about the real thing:

  • Latin word and sentence lengths differ from English, so a layout that fits filler may not fit real copy.
  • It tests neither the shortest nor the longest realistic case, which is where layouts usually break.
  • It cannot represent the content itself, so a design signed off on filler has not been reviewed for meaning.
  • Placeholder text shipped to production is a common and highly visible mistake; search for it before release.
