Calendar arithmetic is harder than it looks

Months have different lengths, leap years land every four years except centuries not divisible by 400, and "a month from the 31st" has no single correct answer. That is why these tools exist rather than a subtraction. The Age Calculator gives an age in years, months and days as well as a total day count, borrowing correctly from the previous month rather than assuming 30 days. The Date Difference does the same job between any two dates.

Working days are a different question

Project deadlines, notice periods, statutory response windows and delivery estimates are counted in business days, not calendar days. The Working Days excludes weekends between two dates, which typically removes about two sevenths of the span — a 30-day calendar window is nearer 21 working days, and the gap is enough to miss a deadline by if you assume the wrong basis. Public holidays vary by country and are the one thing you should check by hand against your own calendar.

Inclusive or exclusive?

The single most common error in date maths is being one day out, and it comes from disagreeing about whether both endpoints count. From Monday to Friday is four days of elapsed time but five days of attendance. Decide which you mean before you read the result — contracts and invoices usually mean elapsed, rotas and bookings usually mean inclusive.

Longer spans

The Generation Calculator places a birth year in its generational cohort and gives the boundaries it sits between, which is useful context rather than precise science — the cut-offs are conventions and different sources draw them a year or two apart. For converting a long span into other units rather than pinning it to dates, the duration tools linked above handle months, weeks and years.

Frequently asked questions

Does a date difference include both the start and end day?

Each calculator states its convention on its own page, and the distinction matters. Counting the days between Monday and Friday gives four if you measure the gap and five if you count the days themselves. Contracts and notice periods usually specify which they mean; when they do not, the inclusive count is the safer assumption.

Why do working-day counts differ between countries?

Because both the weekend and the public holidays differ. Most of Europe treats Saturday and Sunday as the weekend, much of the Middle East does not, and holiday calendars rarely overlap. A working-day figure is only as good as the calendar behind it, so check which one a tool is using before quoting a delivery date.

How are leap years handled?

Directly, by counting real calendar days rather than assuming a 365-day year. That is why a span crossing 29 February comes out one day longer than the same span in an ordinary year, and why converting a day count back into years produces a fraction rather than a round number.

Why does adding a month sometimes land on an unexpected date?

Because months are not equal lengths. Adding one month to 31 January has no exact answer — there is no 31 February — so a convention has to be chosen, usually clamping to the last valid day. Adding months then subtracting them again will not always return you to where you started.
