Metric vs imperial: converting without errors
A confused unit conversion once destroyed a £100m Mars probe. Most of ours are less dramatic, but the same trap catches everyone: assuming a number without checking its unit.
Why two systems still exist
Most of the world standardised on metric, built on tidy powers of ten. A handful of countries kept imperial units — inches, pounds, gallons — for everyday life. So recipes, tools, weather and travel constantly mix the two, and every mix is a chance to slip.
The conversions worth knowing
A few anchors cover most situations: one inch is 2.54 cm, one mile is about 1.6 km, one kilo is about 2.2 pounds, and one US gallon is about 3.8 litres. Memorising a handful means you can sanity-check any conversion at a glance.
Where errors creep in
Watch two things especially. US and UK gallons differ — the UK gallon is about 20% larger — so fuel economy and recipes can be silently wrong. And weight versus volume in cooking: a cup of flour and a cup of water do not weigh the same, so converting cups to grams needs the ingredient, not just the number.

The conversions worth memorising
A handful of factors cover most everyday needs. An inch is exactly 2.54 centimetres — this is a definition, not a measurement, so it is exact. A mile is 1.609 kilometres. A pound is 0.4536 kilograms, and a kilogram is 2.205 pounds. A litre is 1.76 UK pints or 0.22 UK gallons. A foot is 0.3048 metres, again exactly.
For rough mental work, some approximations are close enough to be useful: kilometres to miles is roughly multiply by six and drop a zero (100 km ≈ 60 miles, actually 62). Kilograms to pounds is double and add a tenth (10 kg ≈ 22 lb, exact to three figures). Metres to feet is multiply by three and add ten per cent. None of these is precise, but all are fast, and knowing roughly what the answer should be is the best defence against a mistyped conversion.
The gallon problem
A US gallon is 3.785 litres. A UK gallon is 4.546 litres. Both are handled by the volume converter. They differ by a fifth, and both are called a gallon. Any recipe, fuel-economy figure or tank capacity that does not say which one it means is ambiguous, and the error is large enough to matter — an American recipe calling for a gallon of stock will overwhelm a British cook working from a UK gallon by nearly a litre.
Pints and fluid ounces inherit the same split. A UK pint is 568 ml and a US pint is 473 ml. Worse, a UK fluid ounce is 28.4 ml while a US one is 29.6 ml, so the ounces themselves differ and there are twenty to a UK pint against sixteen to a US pint. Cooking conversions are the single most error-prone area in the whole subject, and the safest approach is to convert to grams and millilitres and stay there.
Weight, mass and why scales lie a little
Strictly, kilograms measure mass and pounds-force measure weight, and the two are only interchangeable in a constant gravitational field. In everyday use on Earth this distinction never bites, and treating a kilogram as 2.205 pounds is fine. It matters in engineering and physics, where a newton is the unit of force and a kilogram firmly is not.
The stone is a further complication for anyone converting body weight. A stone is 14 pounds, so 11 stone 4 is 158 pounds is 71.7 kilograms. Stones are used almost exclusively in the UK and Ireland, and almost never in writing outside personal weight, which is why most calculators handle them as a special case rather than a general unit.
Temperature is not a scaling factor
Every other conversion here is a multiplication. Temperature is not, because Celsius and Fahrenheit have different zero points as well as different degree sizes. The conversion is F = C × 9/5 + 32, and the offset is what breaks the pattern. You cannot convert a temperature difference the same way you convert a temperature: a rise of 10°C is a rise of 18°F, not 50°F.
The two scales meet at −40, where −40°C and −40°F are the same temperature. Kelvin removes the offset problem entirely by starting at absolute zero, which is why scientific work uses it: a difference in kelvin and a difference in Celsius are numerically identical.
Precision and false accuracy
Converting 6 feet to 1.8288 metres implies you measured to a tenth of a millimetre. You did not. A converted figure should carry roughly the same precision as the original, so 6 feet becomes 1.83 metres and a 5-mile run becomes an 8-kilometre one, not 8.0467. Carrying spurious decimals through a calculation makes results look authoritative while hiding how rough the input actually was.
Common questions
What is the most common unit conversion mistake?
Converting a squared or cubed unit with the linear factor. A metre is 3.281 feet, but a square metre is 3.281² = 10.76 square feet, and a cubic metre is 35.31 cubic feet. Using 3.281 for area understates it by a factor of three.
Which conversions are exact and which are approximate?
An inch is exactly 25.4 mm and a pound is exactly 0.45359237 kg — both defined, not measured. Most others you meet in daily use are rounded, so rounding at the end rather than the middle matters.
Why did the Mars Climate Orbiter fail?
Because one team supplied thruster data in pound-force seconds while the receiving software expected newton-seconds. Nothing was mis-measured; the units were simply never reconciled, and a $125 million spacecraft entered the atmosphere too low.
