Why the world can’t agree on how to weigh things

Mass, weight and the units that confuse the two
Strictly, a kilogram measures mass and a newton measures weight — the force that mass experiences under gravity. Everyday use collapses the distinction, and for conversions on Earth that is harmless: this tool treats kilograms, pounds and stones as measures of the same quantity, which is how shops, scales and recipes all use them.
The distinction does bite in two places. Engineering calculations need newtons, so a 70 kg person exerts about 687 N — multiply by 9.81. And a "pound" appears in some contexts as pound-force rather than pound-mass, which is why aerospace and older mechanical texts carry the awkward slug and poundal units to keep the equations dimensionally honest.
The other trap is the ton. A metric tonne is 1,000 kg, a US short ton is 907 kg and a UK long ton is 1,016 kg — an 11 percent spread that matters on any bill of materials or freight quote. If a document says simply "ton", find out which one before you order.
