What your result means

Pace is how long it takes to cover one mile or kilometre — the number runners use to plan races and training. Multiply it out over a race distance to predict a finish time, or use it to hold a steady, even effort.

Why this one is different

The distance and time you typed are echoed back as their own rows, which is how a mistyped entry gets caught before a whole training session is built on it. Race presets fill the distance field from a standard event, so a target time for a half marathon takes two inputs rather than a lookup and a conversion.

How it works

Turn a distance and a time into a pace

Pace is simply time divided by distance — how long it takes to cover one kilometre or one mile. Runners think in pace rather than speed because it maps directly onto the clock: if your target is a sub-50-minute 10K, you need to hold 5:00 per kilometre.

Enter any distance and the time you took (or plan to take) and this shows your pace per kilometre and per mile, plus your average speed. The race presets fill in standard distances instantly.

Formula

Pace = total time ÷ distance

Speed is the inverse: distance ÷ time. 1 mile = 1.609 km.

Example calculation

Running 10 km in 55 minutes:

Pace = 55 ÷ 10 = 5.5 min/km = 5:30 per km
Speed = 10 ÷ (55 ÷ 60) = 10.9 km/h

Frequently asked questions

What is a good running pace?

It varies hugely with fitness and distance. A common recreational target is around 6:00/km; competitive club runners often hold 4:00/km or faster over 10K. Compare against your own history rather than others.

How do I use this to plan a race?

Pick a goal finish time, enter it with the race distance (use a preset), and the pace shown is what you need to hold. Practise running at that pace in training.

How do I convert between min/km and min/mile?

Multiply a per-kilometre pace by 1.609 to get per-mile. A 5:00/km pace is about 8:03/mile.

What is negative splitting?

Running the second half of a race slightly faster than the first. It is the pacing pattern most often seen in strong performances, because it leaves the hardest effort for when the finish is in reach.

Can I predict a marathon time from a 10k?

Roughly. A common rule multiplies your 10k time by about 4.7, but it only holds if you have trained the distance. Without long runs behind you, the real time will be slower.

How much does a hilly course cost me?

As a rough guide, expect to lose more time on climbs than you regain on descents, so a rolling course runs slower than a flat one at the same effort. Pace by effort on hills and let the clock vary.

Assumptions & limitations

Every figure here comes from a simplified model. Keep these limits in mind when reading your result:

  • Pace is calculated as a flat average over the whole distance. Real races are rarely even, and a negative or positive split can hide inside the same average.
  • Predicted finish times assume you hold the entered pace throughout. They do not model fatigue, so extrapolating a 5K pace to a marathon will flatter you considerably.
  • Terrain, gradient, heat, altitude and wind are not accounted for. A hilly or hot course can cost a minute a mile or more against the same effort on the flat.
  • Distances use the standard race lengths — a marathon is 42.195 km. GPS watches routinely over-read, so your device may disagree with the official distance.
  • This is a planning and conversion tool, not training guidance. Sudden increases in pace or volume are how injuries happen.
