Why this one is different
It works backwards from when you need to wake, and it adds the time it actually takes to fall asleep rather than assuming you drop off the moment you lie down. Several bedtimes are given, not one, because cycle length varies between people and across a night.
The 90-minute rhythm your alarm keeps interrupting
In 1953 a researcher watching sleeping infants noticed their eyes darting under closed lids — the discovery of REM sleep. We now know sleep isn't one flat state but a repeating cycle of roughly 90 minutes, climbing from light sleep down into deep sleep and back up through dreaming REM.
Wake at the top of a cycle and you feel sharp; wake in the deep-sleep trough and you feel wrecked — even after eight hours. That's why six full cycles can beat a broken seven hours. This tool simply counts backwards in 90-minute blocks so your alarm lands on an upswing.
How it works
Choose whether you're setting a wake-up time or a bedtime, then enter that time. The calculator adds 15 minutes to fall asleep and counts complete 90-minute cycles, showing the times that finish a cycle cleanly. Aim for five or six cycles (7.5–9 hours) for most adults.
Worked example
You need to be up at 7:00 AM and want to wake at the end of a cycle rather than the middle of one:
6 cycles = 6 × 90 = 540 min (9 hours)
Bedtime = 7:00 − 0:15 − 9:00 = 9:45 PM
5 cycles = 7.5 hours → 11:15 PM
4 cycles = 6 hours → 12:45 AM
The five- and six-cycle options are highlighted because 7.5–9 hours covers the recommended range for most adults. Four cycles will get you through a day; three is a rescue plan, not a routine.

It's an average — real cycles range from about 70 to 120 minutes and change through the night. Treat the suggested times as a strong starting point and adjust to how you actually feel.
How many cycles should I aim for?+
Most adults do best on five to six cycles a night — roughly 7.5 to 9 hours. Consistently getting only three or four cycles builds up sleep debt.
Why does the calculator add time before the first cycle?+
Most people take 10-20 minutes to fall asleep. Counting cycles from the moment you get into bed would put every wake time slightly too early.
Is it better to wake mid-cycle or sleep less?+
Waking at the end of a cycle usually feels easier than waking from deep sleep, but total sleep matters more over time. Do not cut an hour of sleep just to land on a cycle boundary.
Do cycles stay the same length through the night?+
No. Early cycles hold more deep sleep, later ones more REM, and their length varies from roughly 70 to 110 minutes. The 90-minute figure is an average.
What if I wake up during the night?+
Brief awakenings are normal and most are forgotten. If you are awake for more than about 20 minutes, getting up and doing something quiet in low light is usually more effective than lying there.

The cycle model is a useful average rather than a measurement of your own sleep:
- Cycles are treated as 90 minutes. Real cycles vary between roughly 70 and 110 minutes and change through the night.
- A fixed allowance is added for falling asleep. Yours may be shorter or considerably longer.
- Waking at a cycle boundary is a comfort heuristic, not a substitute for total sleep.
- Shift work, jet lag, alcohol, caffeine and sleep disorders all alter sleep architecture in ways no clock-based model can capture.
